Great Shelford Village Charity Ltd, the corporate trustee of The Great Shelford Village Charity, seeks expressions of interest from local people wishing to join our board of directors. With three long-serving directors retiring this year, we are looking to recruit a similar number and keep a board headcount of around ten.
What does The Great Shelford Village Charity do?
The charity exists to help people in need within the village and surrounding area:
- We own and manage 53 almshouse homes at More’s Meadow where we provide affordable accommodation for families, couples and individuals.
- We also own some 6 acres of land comprising allotments, a community garden and parkland.
- Additionally, the Charity provides grants and makes donations in support of local organisations, good causes, and villagers in need.
What do our directors do?
The directors, all unpaid volunteers, oversee everything the charity does, from setting strategy through to service delivery and financial management. While some directors provide professional expertise in areas such as finance or law, others bring managerial, pastoral and other life experiences.
We meet every 2 months for around 2 hours and some directors take a lead role in specific projects. Typically, the commitment amounts to one or two days per month.
We have legal and regulatory responsibilities similar to those of charity trustees and we are all required to undergo a basic DBS check. See:

What sort of people are we looking for?
We welcome applicants from local people who are committed to village life and the wellbeing of residents – and we would be particularly interested to hear from those with experience in any of the following areas:
- Land management and conservation
- Professional fund-raising
- Financial governance
