Report suggests almshouse residents live longer.
Almshouses provide affordable community housing for local people in housing need. While providing independent living, they are usually also designed around a communal area, encouraging neighbourliness and providing opportunities for friendship and communal support.
A report published this month found evidence that almshouse residents experience a longevity boost, living up to two-and-a-half years longer than others from the same socio-economic group living elsewhere.
“This latest research builds on past research pointing, perhaps, to the great value of companionship and strong micro-communities that this unique housing model embodies,” said Nick Phillips, Chief Executive of The Almshouse Association.
